4 Tips for College Students Balancing School and Internships

One of the biggest challenges students face is finding a balance between school and work. As a student, you already have a heavy workload and it may seem like you don’t have enough time to take on the responsibilities an internship brings. Although dividing your attention between school and work can sound impossible, there are a few tips you can follow to successfully balance the two.

1. Create a Schedule

One of the best ways to achieve a work and school balance is to create a flexible schedule.

Create a schedule that allows for changes to be made if something comes up. Also, having a schedule is necessary to stay on track of deadlines and responsibilities. Dedicate specific days of the week for school, then the others for work. Doing so will allow you to focus on one task at a time without becoming overwhelmed.

2. Stay Organized

It can be easy to lose focus when you have a demanding schedule. Being organized can alleviate stress and save time. Whether you purchase a planner or make a to-do list, being organized is essential to balancing your responsibilities.

It is also important to separate your school and work life from your personal life. Don’t worry about what you aren’t currently working on. This means studying specifically during the time you set aside for school and vice versa. When it comes to efficiently managing your time, setting boundaries is crucial.

3. Over Communicate

Although it may sound simple, communication is a critical aspect people tend to forget.

Make it a point to talk to your supervisor about your workload and academic obligations. Once they know about your other obligations, you can work together to create a realistic schedule. Maintaining clear communication ensures you and your supervisor are on the same page, as well as prevents misunderstandings.

4. Set Aside Time for Yourself

With two busy schedules, it may seem like there are not enough hours in the day to dedicate time to yourself. The most important time to block out in your schedule is time for yourself to relax and regroup. Whether it is watching a movie, going on a walk, or cooking a yummy meal, it is important to take some time to yourself so you don’t get burnt out. This personal time can motivate you and give you something to look forward to.

Although it may seem challenging, balancing school, work, and your personal life is possible. If you have a balanced schedule, stay organized, and maintain communication, you can accomplish a lot more than you think!
