Power Picks: Favorite Podcasts

The art of audio storytelling is thriving today. There are podcasts to suit every taste, from true-crime to pop culture. There are so many podcasts out there it can be difficult to choose. We put together a list of some are currently listening to!

Kortni:
I love a good true-crime podcast. My Favorite Murder used to be my go-to, however, they started to get too long for me – the first 30 minutes was consumed with the hosts talking about miscellaneous things. Now, I love Morbid on Spotify. One of the hosts, Aliana, is an autopsy technician. I think this brings a unique perspective to each discussion. Also, the podcast has an Instagram page I religiously follow to view photos and extra content that pairs with each episode.

Sommer:
Like Kortni, true crime podcasts are my favorite! I listen to a few podcasts sporadically, but the best podcast I’ve ever listened to is season one of Serial. Serial is an investigative journalism podcast by Sarah Koenig. I don’t want to spoil too much, but season 1 re-visits the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee and the conviction of Adnan Syed. Koenig is an AMAZING journalist and explores the case from new angles and interviews many people surrounding the case. If you’re looking for an in-depth, fresh look into a decades-old crime, Serial is the podcast for you!

Catherine:
I am not much of a podcast person, I prefer reading a book or article over listening to people talk. There is one podcast my mom and I have always loved though because we read the book first – it is Oprah’s Super Soul Convos. I first read her book “The Wisdom of Sundays” which led to the podcast now on Spotify. It features extensive conversations with some phenomenal people including Dr. Maya Angelou, Brene Brown, Lady Gaga and many more. After listening to the episodes I always walk away with a new nugget of info or inspo.

Anna:
It’s hard for me to pick just one podcast! I like to switch between true crime, interview style and pop culture, but one I always revisit is Lady Lovin’. Though it is no longer on the air, there are so many phenomenal episodes that tackle issues that women care about: friendship, dating, health, career advice and more! Hosts Jilly Hendrix, Greta Titelman and Lo Bosworth have great banter, which is critical for an entertaining podcast.

Julia:
Like Catherine, I typically spend my time reading a good book rather than diving into a podcast. With that being said, I know there are a lot of great ones out there! On my list are Serial and Adulting. Recently I’ve been listening to 1619 by The New York Times, which is an audio series hosted by Nikole Hannah-Jones, that examines how slavery has impacted America, connecting stories from the past and present.

Catie:
Since I first started listening to podcasts, there has only been one that remains consistent and that is The Morning Toast! This podcast has always been my go-to to keep me in the know about what is happening in pop culture current events. Not only is this podcast informative but Girl With No Job and Jackie O are just too entertaining to pass up. Great way to start or end your day!

Lauren:
I’m a huge music person, so it is pretty rare that I’m playing a podcast and not an album. However, I listen to Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain whenever a new episode comes out! Emma is a 19-year-old YouTuber that has gained a huge social media following just for being funny and authentic. Whether she’s telling embarrassing stories or getting real about anxiety, she establishes a strong connection with her audience and makes it feel like you’re listening to a friend. Her voice is super calming and I love to play her podcast when I’m writing, tanning or driving a long distance.

Brooke:
There are too many good ones to choose from! I listen to different podcasts depending on my mood but lately, I have been loving We Bought A House. This podcast is hosted by a YouTuber, Claudia Sulewski, and her boyfriend, Finneas O’Connell. They talk about pop culture, music, relationship tips and everything under the sun! Something about listening to their show just makes you feel like you are chatting with two close friends
