Strategies to Get your Brand’s Story Featured in Local Media

In the fast-paced world of local media, capturing the eyes and ears of your audience can be a daunting task. Prior to joining The Power Group, my email as a newscast producer was flooded daily with press releases and story ideas from local businesses. Sadly, most of those emails only got 30 seconds to grab my attention before being deleted. However, now that I have transitioned to the other side of the industry, I’m prepared to share the strategies of how to not only get your business’s story in the spotlight, but to keep it there!

Crafting an Engaging Narrative

Storytelling is a key element when it comes to an engaging media report. When reflecting on the news you’ve consumed over the last several days or weeks, what do you remember? Chances are, it is the stories that featured someone you could relate to.

Like your favorite fairy tales, every news story has a main character, someone the audience can connect with. Identify one person from your organization who can effectively represent the brand. Keep in mind this person does not always have to be the CEO or founder, but they should be able to act as a spokesperson, lending a human element to the story. By giving a face to the brand, you also provide your organization with authenticity and a relatable touch that local media outlets and their audiences will appreciate.

For those who may be new to the interview scene, there’s no need to worry. The Power Group offers Spokesperson Training and interview preparation to ensure you’re ready to shine during any media opportunity our team secures for you.

Timeliness

Additionally, journalists consistently hunt for what is current and relevant for their audiences. To prevent your business’s story from ending up in the trash folder, share important news promptly and stay up-to-date with what is happening in the news cycle. A relevant story is not only more appealing but also more likely to be picked up and reported on by media outlets.

You can make your story more attractive by linking it to local events, trends or current issues in the news. This connection also positions your business as a contributing and engaged member of the local community, ultimately strengthening your brand’s relationship with its audience.

Visual Appeal

We’ve all heard the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” which holds true in many cases. Certain platforms, like broadcast and social media, use video and photos to differentiate themselves from the competition in print and digital spaces.

Videos, in particular, have gained popularity in storytelling because they can combine audio and visual elements, creating a more immersive and engaging experience. In today’s digital age, visual content is also more likely to be shared, expanding the reach of your message. So, whether you are sharing a behind-the-scenes look at your company or narrating a customer’s success story, adding visual content can significantly elevate the overall effectiveness of your communication strategy.
